The Soul of Balti Architecture
Rooted in a blend of Tibetan and Kashmiri traditions, with Central Asian and Persian influences, Balti architecture is a marvel of natural engineering. Structures like ours are built to harmonize with the dramatic landscape, using materials sourced directly from the earth. This style is a functional and artistic response to the region's harsh climate, designed for durability and insulation against cold winters.
The primary materials are stone, sun-dried mud bricks, and an abundance of timber from poplar, willow, and juniper trees. A defining feature is the intricate woodcarving that adorns pillars, doors, window frames, and balconies, often displaying geometric patterns, floral motifs, and ancient symbols. Structurally, it employs a unique earthquake-resistant technique known as "cator and cribbage," a timber frame system that provides flexibility during seismic activity. Rooms are often centered around a single wooden pillar, and traditional homes feature a central skylight for light and ventilation.

Staying at Khar was a truly memorable experience. It offered the perfect blend of homely comfort and luxurious hospitality. The staff were warm and attentive, the food was excellent, the ambiance was peaceful, and the views were absolutely stunning. If you're a foodie, I recommend trying their Moroccan Chicken, Penne Pasta, and Dynamite Chicken, all full of flavor and beautifully presented. I personally loved these more than the Pakistani cuisine. One of the highlights for me was their incredible collection of books. If you're an avid reader, you'll love spending time in their lawn, enjoying a good read with the view of the mountains. The team also went the extra mile by arranging transport for my trip to Basho Meadows, which made the whole experience even more seamless. Highly recommend this place if you're looking for a relaxing and well-managed stay!

Peaceful stay, mountain views & delicious Chinese food! Khar Skardu is a beautiful blend of tradition and comfort. The design gives fort vibes with a modern touch, and the mountain views from the rooms are simply stunning. One thing that really stood out was the Chinese food — fresh, flavorful, and better than many city restaurants! We tried their Dragon Chicken and Khar Special Chow Mein — both were top notch. The hospitality was amazing, and the overall vibe was calm and relaxing. Definitely a must-visit if you’re coming to Skardu.
